Have you noticed a long queue near the billing counter during the sales season in pantaloons? Why is that so, why do we see people going out with so many shopping bags during the end of season sales – is it because they enjoy shopping during such season or is there some other factor that drives their interest. Yes, there is a factor, and that factor is the decrease in price. Law of demand states an inverse relationship between the price of a good and the quantity buyers are willing to purchase in a defined time period (Ceteris Paribus - all other things remain constant) – hence the quantity demanded for a product increases when there is a decrease in its price. This is the reason why big brands like pantaloons, Shoppers Stop, Biba, forever 21 offers discount during the end of the season , in order to increase the demand for their left over stock. Law of demand is followed by famous e-commerce websites as well – For example Amazon, Flipkart offers great Indian sale during Diwali, because Diwali is festival where Indians buy new clothes, utensils and gifts. Hence these e-commerce sites decrease the prices for the products in order to increase the demand. Decrease in price mechanism is followed by Nykaa – famous beauty brand as well. This is the reason why there is a great demand for Nykaa, as they offer all the famous beauty brands products at a lower price than what is available in shopping malls or beauty stores near us. Accordingly, the increase in price for a product decreases the quantity demanded for the same (Ceteris Paribus - all other things remain constant). Pizza Hut has 1+1 Wednesday offer – during Wednesday there is a great demand for pizzas due to the reduced prize, however the demand is less as compared to Wednesday during other weekdays, due to the higher price charged.Even real estate business suffered due to the Law of demand – When the interest rate for Housing loan increased the demand for properties went down, hence the real estate business owners pressured the authorities to decrease the interest rate in order to increase the demand for housing properties.
